Malaysia is home to countless ghost stories and eerie destinations, but did you know that one international horror film brought the country’s mysterious highlands to the big screen?

Released in 2022, Don’t Look At The Demon is a supernatural horror film that follows a team of paranormal investigators as they travel to Fraser’s Hill, Malaysia, to investigate a terrifying case of alleged demonic possession.

A Chilling Investigation

Directed by Brando Lee, Don’t Look At The Demon centres on a world-famous team of ghost hunters who are invited to investigate a family living in a secluded mansion deep within Fraser’s Hill.

What begins as another paranormal investigation soon spirals into something far more sinister, as the team uncovers dark secrets and encounters terrifying supernatural forces that challenge everything they know about the paranormal.

Rather than relying solely on jump scares, the film blends psychological horror with occult themes, creating an unsettling atmosphere throughout its runtime.

Nestled in Pahang, Fraser’s Hill has long been associated with ghost stories, abandoned colonial buildings and mysterious folklore, making it the perfect backdrop for a supernatural thriller.

Surrounded by mist-covered forests and historic architecture dating back to the British colonial era, the hill station has developed a reputation as one of Malaysia’s most atmospheric destinations. Its cool climate and secluded environment only add to its haunting appeal.

The filmmakers made full use of Fraser’s Hill’s natural beauty, turning its quiet roads, dense jungle and colonial bungalows into the setting for an international horror story.

An International Cast

IMDb

The film stars Harris Dickinson, Fiona Dourif, Jordan Belfi, Malin Crépin and Randy Wayne, alongside several Malaysian cast members.

Don’t Look At The Demon was released just as Harris Dickinson became one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. The actor gained widespread recognition for his performances in Where the Crawdads Sing, The King’s Man and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the latter earning multiple Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture.

Although Don’t Look At The Demon may not have received the same level of mainstream attention as other supernatural films, it has since gained a following among horror fans for its eerie atmosphere, supernatural themes and unique Malaysian backdrop.

A Different Side Of Malaysia

For many international viewers, Don’t Look At The Demon offered a glimpse of a side of Malaysia rarely seen on screen.

Instead of bustling cities and tropical beaches, the film showcased the country’s misty mountain landscapes and rich supernatural folklore, highlighting Fraser’s Hill as more than just a peaceful getaway.

Whether you’re a horror enthusiast or simply curious about films shot in Malaysia, Don’t Look At The Demon is an intriguing addition to the growing list of international productions that have turned the country’s iconic locations into unforgettable cinematic settings.
