One of the hottest TVB series airing at the moment is “Happily Ever After? (婚後事)”, starring Him Law (罗子溢), Yoyo Chen (陈自瑶) and Joey Law (罗天宇). However, the drama recently came under fire after Hong Kong anchor Vivian Tsang (曾子晴) accused them of depicting her as one of the character’s “hookup partners”.
The claim first arose when Vivian shared a photo of one of the scenes from the drama where Joey’s character, Cheng Tianhui (transliteration), was chatting with his many partners through a dating app. Vivian noted that TVB had used her photo to depict one of the girls, which she felt was defamation. Through her Instagram account, she called out TVB, saying, “Isn’t this outrageous? I have never used a dating app before. TVB took my photo from Instagram without authorization to use as one of his (Cheng Tianhui’s) hookup partners.”
However, shortly after posting the claims, Vivian took her post down and retracted her claims. She clarified that a third party may be involved in the issue, meaning the rights to use her photos may have been granted to TVB through someone else without her knowledge. Following the accusation of illegally using Vivian’s image in their drama, TVB issued a statement in response.
In their statement, TVB denied illegally using Vivian’s photo, saying they have made efforts to ensure that all content used in the program strictly follows legal regulations to not go against personal rights. The broadcasting company added that they have legally obtained all the images used in the drama and paid all relevant fees to the legal copyright holder, either the person in the image or their agency.
TVB also responded to Vivian’s follow-up statement that a third party may be involved, saying she should refrain from accusing TVB without carefully verifying all the facts. The company ends their statement by saying they are committed to protecting copyright laws and respecting personal privacy and will take responsibility if found guilty.
It’s good that TVB quickly rectified the matter – and we hope Vivian and TVB can amicably settle this issue.
