After back to back critical disappointments and above average box office numbers with “Theri”, and “Bairavaa”, Kollywood (No, I did not misspell Bollywood) star Vijay hits a home run in “Mersal“. “Mersal” has been raking in the big bucks not only in India but internationally, as well. Directed by Atlee – who previously worked with Vijay on “Theri” – “Mersal” has already grossed over US$32.5 million worldwide in merely 12 days.

While US$32.5 million may not seem like a big deal to many – I know, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” made over US$2 billion – it is still a huge box office success in terms of Indian films. As of now, only 5 Indian movies have grossed more than US$100 million in the global box office.

- “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” – US$267 million
- “PK” – US$130 million
- “Baahubali: The Beginning” – US$100 million
- “Dhoom 3” – US$100 million
Prior to “Mersal”, Vijay’s highest grossing movie to date was “Theri”, which grossed US$24 million, while his previous film “Bairavaa”, grossed US$17 million. “Mersal” has not reached the end of its run, yet, and will continue to rake in more money in the coming weeks.
According to Business Today India, “Mersal” has already broken “Kabali’s” record in the UK and is very close to breaking “Enthiran’s” record in Malaysia. Both Kabali and Enthiran stars Rajnikanth, who is hands down one of, if not the biggest star in Indian cinema.
“Mersal” is a action-thriller that centres around magician/doctor played by Vijay who mysteriously kidnaps people in the medical industry, for reasons that I will not spoil. Check out the teaser trailer below:
