High fashion brands like Miu Miu are known for bold and outlandish pieces – so perhaps not everything they put out will get a thumbs-up from netizens.
For their F/W2023 collection, Italian fashion house Miu Miu unveiled what seemed to be embellished underwear. The item comes in a selection of colours and is completely covered in sequins. According to the website, the panties are made of silk and have a back zipper, perhaps to make them easier to put on. If you’re wondering the price, a pair of these sequined panties costs about US$5,600 or RM26,000.
After these embellished knickers debuted on the runway, tons of celebs have been spotted wearing them. K-pop idol Minnie (민니) from (G)I-DLE ((여자)아이들) posed in a pink version for the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Singapore and so did Chinese actress Zhao Jinmai (赵今麦) for a Miu Miu campaign as the brand’s ambassador.
However, despite being promoted by many celebrities, netizens still cannot accept the underwear. The particular item went viral on Weibo, with many sharing their confusion over who the item was intended for. Chinese content creator Little Aunt Tiantian (田田小阿姨) shared her experience buying the item at a Miu Miu boutique, detailing her conversation with the salesperson. She said she was confused about the sequined underwear, specifically about how to wear it and who would wear it.
She wasn’t the only one with opinions about the undergarment because many netizens share the same sentiment. One Weibo user said, “I can’t find the value of this (underwear). It’s ugly and expensive. It might even hurt your hands if you put them in your pocket”. Some lamented that you can’t even show them off if you buy them, saying, “How can you show off these diamond panties? Wear them on the street? Do you think you’re Superman?”
