A few tragic incidents have recently occurred in shopping centres across Malaysia. However, this most recent one is perhaps the most terrifying, as news outlets report there was a shooting at Setia City Mall over the weekend.
The sound of gunshots caused panic among shoppers, and singer Vanessa Reynauld and actor Aaron Aziz were apparently among the people affected during the terrifying ordeal. Here are their respective accounts of the incident:
In a TikTok post, Vanessa Reynauld revealed that she, her family, and other shoppers took shelter in one of the shops at Setia City Mall after hearing gunfire. The singer was casually vlogging when the first shot rang out. Security guards on the other side of the shutter doors can be seen guiding shoppers to safety as a second gunshot is heard.
“I was there for a quick errand, but unfortunately this happened. This is my first time experiencing something like this and it was so scary!! I am home safely now, I hope and pray that the victims are okay 😭😭 Stay safe out there,” the songstress wrote in her captions.
Aaron Aziz also posted on TikTok to inform fans that although he wasn’t at the shopping centre during the incident, he immediately drove to Setia City Mall to pick up his daughters as soon as he heard the news. “Guys, make sure your loved ones are safe if they were at SCM. There was a shooting, and my daughter told me that everyone had to be evacuated,” said the actor.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that a shooting did indeed occur at the establishment. A man in his 30s shot a cleaner at the mall eight times before fleeing by hijacking a car, forcing the driver at gunpoint to take him to Shah Alam.
According to several reports, the gunman has been identified, and police are currently searching for him. As for the injured cleaner, he was promptly taken to Shah Alam Hospital for treatment. His condition is now stable. Setia City Mall has now reopened for business with heightened security.
