Many drivers at some point in their driving career have experienced some varying levels of road rage, from mild frustration to full on arguments. However, if the bear has been sufficiently poked, people can lose all reason and pull some dangerous stunts. This is probably what led this Singaporean man to bust someone’s rear windshield.

Soh Kian Hui, 45, was fined RM5,500 on Wednesday, 14th February, after pleading guilty to causing over RM2,500 worth of damages. According to the charge sheet imposed by Magistrate Fatin Dalilah Khalid,. Soh — who is a taxi driver — had damaged the rear windshield of a Toyota Fortuner with a cane after a heated argument with the vehicle owner.

The incident took place at 1:58pm on Saturday at a North-South Expressway near Pagoh, Muar, and was caught on video. The 54-second video was uploaded to Facebook and has since gone viral, with 52k views and climbing. In said view, Soh can be seen rushing out of his car with a cane before smashing the Toyota Fortuner’s rear windshield.

The accused was charged with mischief under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a one-to-five-year prison sentence, a fine, or both if convicted. However, the prosecutor argued that Soh should face a heftier fine. According to The Star, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Ariiff Marzuki argued that a heavier fine should’ve been imposed in order to deter not only Soh but his fellow drivers as well from committing these acts of violence.

To counter this, Soh’s lawyer, Norian Sakina Zikri, appealed for a lighter sentence as her client is currently caring for his 71-year-old mother, who is recovering from cancer and has systemic lupus erythematosus disease. She also added that the accused does not have a prior criminal record in Malaysia and has cooperated fully with the police.

Soh has since paid the fine and will be avoiding his 12-month prison time.
