There have been many viral moments at K-pop concerts, especially when idols interact with fans onstage. However, one recent incident involving SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) member Mingyu (민규) sparked heated debate about boundaries.
On 21st October 2025 (Tuesday), SEVENTEEN performed at the Moody Centre in Austin, Texas as part of their “NEW_” World Tour. During the encore stage, Mingyu spotted a fan offering shots of alcohol. As shown in now-viral videos, the idol gestured to the fan to pass him the vodka shot via a security personnel. He then proceeded to consume the drink. It’s worth noting that alcohol is sold on the premises and allowed into the concert hall.

Understandably, this incident sparked massive debate, with many CARATs (SEVENTEEN fans) calling out Mingyu, the security and the fan for reckless and irresponsible behaviour. They argued that Mingyu shouldn’t willingly accept a drink, even if it’s from a fan. Some lamented that the drink could’ve been tampered with, bringing up a past incident with TVXQ! Yunho, who got poisoned by an anti-fan after accepting a drink laced with glue.
At the same time, CARATs also slammed the security for passing the drink to the idol, lamenting that they failed to protect him from potential harm. The fan who offered the drink also tried to defend their actions, noting that they had a clear sign about having alcohol. They also argued that Mingyu is an adult capable of making his own decisions. Regardless, the criticism still poured in, with many saying the fan’s actions are still wrong.

The incident also sparked arguments about K-pop idols’ blatant favouritism towards North American fans. Many argue that the fan would’ve gotten more backlash if the incident had happened in Asia. Some also pointed out that idols and fans often disregard fan etiquette when K-pop groups perform in Western countries, with some interactions lauded as entertaining. Meanwhile, the same etiquettes are heavily reinforced in Southeast Asia, citing safety concerns.
As of now, CARATs are calling out SEVENTEEN’s staff and Pledis Entertainment to be more cautious about such interactions to avoid unwanted issues in the future. At the same time, fans also warn the public not to normalise such behaviour with idols. What are your thoughts on this? Here’s a look at the viral moment:
