As the top Malaysian girl group today, DOLLA has shown no signs of slowing down, especially following the release of their new single “DAMELO”. Having said that, fans have always been curious about each member’s life stories before debuting. Luckily, one member was more than happy to open up.

During the latest R U OK?! podcast episode with Alvin Chong, member Sabronzo revealed what her life was like before she debuted with DOLLA. The singer shared that she furthered her studies in the US and how those 5 years living abroad shaped her formative adulthood.

Although she had a great time overseas, the 28-year-old did faced some racism from the people there. The vocalist did not specify what exactly happened during the racist encounters but clarified that she only had a few as most of the people in the states were friendly.

When asked about the changes she notice in her life now that she’s more recognisable, the celeb shared that she’s still processing the fact that young kids look up to her as an idol. “Growing up, I had girl groups that I look up to like the Pussycat Dolls and Danity Kane, and at the time I thought, ‘Wow I wanna be just like them one day’. So I’m still trying to wrap my head around that they are now people who look up to me the same way,” she said.

There were also moments during the episode where Sabronzo talked about the pros and cons of being in a girl group. One of the cons is having to work around everyone’s schedule and availability as group projects tend to take priority. “Unless it’s like a real emergency, we have to make sure everyone is present cause our choreography requires all members to be there otherwise it’ll look weird. So we usually plan our holidays together so that we’ll come back around the same time,” the “BAD” songstress elaborated.

This also includes their solo projects like the time Sabronzo starred in the “Pulau” movie (her film debut). If you remember, the group wasn’t really active during that period. She also compared herself to Alvin, who is a solo artist in his own right. While being in DOLLA means having to split the rewards and salary into four, a solo celeb gets the full pie.

As for pros, Sabronzo revealed how the group would always look out for each other and even take turns to lead in different situations; for instance, answering questions during interview sessions. She also mentioned that their disagreements actually help strengthen their bond as they are still learning to communicate and deal with different types of personalities.

Alvin also asked the singer-actress if DOLLA had conversations about being compared to one another and differing popularity within the group. She replied, “We have, yes. Our label had also prepped us about this possibly happening even before we signed and we agreed that at the end of the day, it’ll still be benefiting the group no matter who’s more popular.”
