Although not frequent, it is not uncommon to witness a dispute between a restaurant server and a customer. In some cases, these arguments quickly escalate into fights, while in others, a customer may yell at one of the employees.

Regardless, most of these confrontations could easily be resolved peacefully, but sadly, some choose to make a scene. This most recent incident sparked debate among netizens after they discovered that an argument broke out at a café due to language. Here’s the story:

Over the weekend, a video posted by @/TravelJimat went viral on social media. The footage showed a customer arguing with staff at a Penang Chendul outlet. The staff could be heard insisting that the customer speak Malay, to which the customer replied that he could not speak the language and preferred English.

“How can you claim to be Malaysian but not speak Malay?” the uploader captioned the post, criticising the customer. The video has sparked mixed reactions from netizens, with some agreeing that the local man should know at least basic Malay words or phrases if he has lived in the country his whole life. Others believe the staff were a little too harsh and should also know English to avoid any misunderstandings.

Not long after the Twitter post went viral, Penang Chendul issued an official statement on Facebook to address the recent incident. “Before the situation gained public attention, both the customer and our staff had already exchanged apologies, and the matter was resolved amicably,” the company wrote.

They added that the situation escalated due to a misunderstanding, while also emphasising that those working in the food service industry should always practise professionalism and self-control. However, they believe that respect should be mutual between the server and the customer.

It was also reported that the argument started because of a missing item in the customer’s order and that one staff member stepped in to translate for the two parties involved in the video. We’re glad to know that everything was resolved peacefully and that both sides have apologised to one another.
