Christmas is upon us, and everyone is looking forward to spend the holidays with their loved ones. Festive decorations at shopping centres across the country have been absolutely lit, but a few were a little too lit, as one might say.
Earlier this month, a Christmas decoration at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur caught fire, causing panic among shoppers. A similar incident occurred again, and this time it involved a Christmas tree located between a resort and a mall, which reportedly suddenly burst into flames. Here’s what happened:
Last night (Monday, 23rd December), it was reported that a fire broke out outside Sunway Resort Hotel, near Sunway Pyramid Mall. The large Christmas tree located at a water fountain next to the Canopy Walk, caught on fire and videos of the incident, have since gone viral on social media. According to The Star, Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station received a distress call at around 7:10pm, and a team was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar told reporters that the fire was quickly extinguished as soon as the firefighters arrived. He added that, thankfully, no structures were damaged by the flames, nor were there any injuries reported that evening. However, investigations are still ongoing into what may have caused the fire. While there is no information on the cause, it wouldn’t be surprising if it turns out that the lights on the tree overheated or short-circuited.
After the video posts went viral, netizens were surprised to see yet another Christmas decoration catch fire. Others made jokes, suggesting that the Grinch was the one who set the tree ablaze, referencing a scene from the 2000 hit film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey. At the time of writing, there have been no updates from Sunway Resort Hotel, Sunway Pyramid or Sunway Group regarding the incident, but reports suggest that everything should be under control now.
