Hygiene issues surrounding restaurants and food outlets are no longer a new topic for Malaysians. Ranging from extreme cases such as rat sightings in glass displays to being served mouldy condiments, these issues keep getting out of hand as time goes by.

A video recently went viral on Facebook, amassing over 232 thousand views and 1,000 shares, which showcased a food stall operator using a pole—typically used for a paintbrush or mop—to stir a pot during food preparation. According to the user who posted the video, the pot contained chicken feet.

At the beginning of the viral 30-second video posted in the ‘Sri Petaling/Kuchai Lama/Oug/Bukit Jalil/Happy Garden/Salak South’ Facebook group, a paint roller pole can be seen resting on a seemingly dirty pavement. After a moment, a man picked up the pole and used it to mix the contents of a pot. The uploader then zoomed out to reveal the name of the establishment, Swee Hing Restaurant, located in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur.

Netizens flooded the comments section, expressing their disgust at the incident. One user shared the restaurant’s address, insisting that the entire eatery should be closed rather than just the stall, as the place is extremely unhygienic. Another user urged everyone to report the vendors to help others avoid dining at the establishment. One netizen questioned whether the stall had any hygiene certificate, while another suggested that the owner should remove the stall from the restaurant immediately.

In response to the criticism from netizens, Swee Hing Restaurant released a statement on its official Facebook page. In the apology, it was announced that the wonton noodle stall had ceased operations, and the restaurant expressed gratitude to netizens for their feedback.

They added that the stall owners and relevant parties had cooperated regarding the issue, and the business would be temporarily suspended. The statement concluded by assuring netizens that they would be updated on any further developments.
