A year ago, Malaysia’s first glow-in-the-dark road lines were installed in Semenyih, Selangor, delighting everyone with the great news. After the road lines were installed in Masai, Johor, many people began urging the government to install the facility across the country, saying the unique facility could be helpful at reducing traffic accidents.
However, it was reported recently that the government discarded the idea because the installation cost seemed high. Adding to the public’s disappointment, it turns out that the previously installed glow-in-the-dark road lines don’t seem to last as long as expected.

Captured by a car passenger and posted on the Facebook page, Hikmah Viral, with over 75.1 thousand views (at the time of writing), the beginning of the video shows a signboard by the Kuala Langat District Public Works Department (JKR) stating that the road beyond it is a glow-in-the-dark road lines area. While the information is yet to be verified, the incident is said to have taken place in an area at Sungai Lang, Banting.
The individual then proceeds to show the viewers the glowing lines on the road, by switching off the car’s headlights. Despite being said to have glow-in-the-dark lines on the road, the whole area was completely dark after the lights were switched off. Malaysian netizens took to the comment section to express their dissatisfaction, stating that the glow only lasted for about two to three weeks, having been eroded by vehicles passing through the area.

Other netizens expressed their anger by commenting that JKR should’ve just installed solar-powered streetlights along the road, instead of wasting it on glow-in-the-dark paints. Another individual also stated that those in charge should’ve visited the areas again to make sure the installation was working perfectly without any flaws.
Despite the gravity of the issue, several people also made light-hearted remarks about how the JKR had defrauded them. Other local netizens also humorously commented that the glow on the lines had already expired and the lines might’ve run out of battery. Jokes aside, we hope that the government will take immediate action on this issue to avoid any unwanted accidents happening in the area.
