Parking can be a frustrating challenge, especially in crowded spaces like shopping malls or busy neighbourhoods. Many people are familiar with the routine of circling the block or waiting for an open spot, only to face a similar struggle at home during major events. The situation gets worse when large gatherings, like weddings, spill into residential areas, taking over parking spaces with extra vehicles and leaving homeowners with limited options.

This week, a video capturing an unusual solution to this issue went viral in Malaysia, leaving viewers both amused and intrigued. In the village of Kampung Matang Bonglai Kechil, Ayer Hitam, Johor, two cars were spotted parked on the roof of a house. Posted by TikTok user @/anaksulong33, the video showed a Perodua Kancil and a Proton Saga parked side-by-side on a roof. The peculiar sighting amused netizens, with many fascinated by the lengths to which the owner had gone to secure a spot.

Awang Ali, the owner of the house and the man behind this creative arrangement explained his reasoning for the unusual setup. With a major wedding event set to take place right outside his home, Awang found himself with no nearby space to park his vehicles. The installation of wedding tents further reduced available parking options, prompting him to consider an unconventional solution. To keep his cars safe and close, he decided to move them to his rooftop—a plan he executed with the help of his nephews and a crane, a process that took around 30 minutes.

As the wedding, on 2nd November 2024, drew over 1,500 guests, Awang’s rooftop parking became a unique attraction. Many guests took the opportunity to capture photos of the cars on the roof, adding a humorous and memorable twist to the day’s celebrations. News of the event spread beyond the village, even prompting a visitor from Pulau Pinang to make the journey just to witness and photograph the unusual scene firsthand.

The TikTok video quickly gained traction, amassing more than 500,000 views and over 33,200 likes. Comments flooded in, with netizens expressing a mix of surprise, amusement, and admiration for Awang’s creativity. Some commenters joked about the logistics of getting the cars up there, while others noted that previously only one car had been parked on the roof, and now there were two. The display of ingenuity resonated with viewers, who appreciated the novel solution to a common problem.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, Awang decided to keep the cars on the roof for another one to two weeks, giving curious visitors more time to capture photos and videos. He noted that both cars, though over a decade old, have been well maintained and continue to serve him reliably. This unique setup, initially born out of necessity, has now turned Awang’s home into a temporary local landmark, delighting both the community and online viewers with a light-hearted display of resourcefulness and humour.
