When it comes to student allowances, some believe that students don’t need a large sum of pocket money to get by. However, it’s not uncommon for students from wealthier families to receive more than the average allowance in Malaysia. But how much allowance is reasonable for a student to live comfortably each month?

A TikTok user, @scholarrzz, posted a video interviewing students about how much they receive from their parents each month. The video garnered 211.3K views and sparked mixed reactions from netizens. In the video, one student mentioned receiving RM10,000, while others reported amounts ranging from RM400 to RM7,000. Most of these students said they relied on their parents for their monthly allowance, and some also mentioned scholarships and PTPTN loans. One student shared that he works part-time to supplement his income.

The TikToker then asked for the students’ opinions on how much money a student needs each month to live comfortably. One student noted that in Selangor, particularly in urban areas where some students need to rent housing, a student might require between RM800 and RM1,000 per month. Other students suggested that an allowance between RM300 and RM3,000 would be enough for students to live comfortably, depending on their lifestyle and expenses.

Netizens were quick to react, with many commenting that students today receive much more money from their parents than in the past. Some were shocked by the RM10,000 figure, though it was later clarified by the TikToker that this amount was for a semester, not a month. Another commenter felt that RM3,000 per month for a UiTM student was excessive. Many commenters reflected on how much they used to get as students, expressing surprise at the amounts mentioned in the video.

While some students appear to receive large allowances, there’s no denying that inflation and rising living costs make higher daily expenses a reality. However, opinions vary, with some believing that giving students too much money could make them ungrateful or irresponsible in the future. What do you think? Should students be allowed to manage large sums of money, or should there be more moderation?
