Whether it’s a 3-star or 5-star, hotels are meant to be a place to escape and relax. Some people just want to get away from their busy lives and enjoy the hotel’s facilities. It can also be a good place to socialise as you’ll meet all kinds of local folks and people from abroad.

Having said that, hotels can sometimes be filled with surprises. For instance, fans will take the opportunity to stalk their idols at the hotel they’re staying in. Guests can also either discover a rat in their hotel room or probably even have an encounter with a paranormal being. But what would you do if you were walking around the halls and discovered a Malayan Tapir “checked in” at the same hotel as you?

1. A Malayan Tapir was spotted roaming around the Hatten Hotel in Melaka today, surprising several guests and staff.

The Fire and Rescue Department says the tapir, who was found on the 5th floor, is believed to have entered via the parking lot and gotten lost.

A video had recently gone viral on social media showing a Malayan Tapir wandering around the parking lot of a hotel in Bandar Hilir, Melaka. In the viral video, the Tapir was shown to be standing in front of the lift at the parking lot, surprising guests and staff as they stumbled upon it. The man recording the video thankfully did not panic and found the situation to be humorous, adding that the Tapir was simply “checking in” at the hotel.

According to The Star, the incident took place at the Estadia Hotel. After being aware of the incident, hotel staff contacted the Fire and Rescue Services Department and the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to take care of the lost Tapir. Apparently, Perhilitan had been searching for the lost creature for about 2 weeks. Funnily enough, the animal somehow made its way to the 5th floor of the hotel.

“We suspect that the animal got lost after coming out from the jungle searching for food and it ended up wandering into the hotel grounds all the way up to the fifth floor by using the staircase on the side of the hotel building,” said Perhilitan director Mohd Firdaus Mahmood. Netizens reacted to the viral video with some showing concerns for the animal while others find the whole thing hilarious.

Thankfully, no hotel guests or staff were hurt during their encounter with the wild animal, and the Malayan Tapir was sedated by Perhilitan rangers. For the time being, the mammal will be placed in the Melaka Zoo before being sent to the National Wildlife Sanctuary Centre in Sungkai, Perak. We hope the Tapir is doing fine and that it won’t wander off again.
