It’s 2023 but businesses and companies discriminating against customers are still rampant. A few days ago, another local business got called out, supposedly for discriminating against people who are not Muslim.
Niresh Kaur shared through Twitter an image of a Hannan Medispa branch with the caption, “Apparently for Muslims only”. According to local reports, the netizen was surveying beauty parlours for spa packages when she called the Jaya One branch of Hannan Medispa. However, after receiving details about a facial package, the spa staff said the service was for Muslim women only.
Hannan Medispa is known as a Muslimah-friendly beauty parlour frequented by hijab-wearing Muslim women, which points to the Muslim woman’s ‘aurat’ being the reason for the company not accepting non-Muslim customers. However, the Twitter user was still curious if she, a woman, is not allowed to see Muslim women’s ‘aurat’ since it was not something she had issues with before.
After her tweet went viral, the beauty parlour did address the discrimination claims on its Facebook page by sharing a testimony from a non-Muslim customer. Niresh also added that the discriminating statement she received might not reflect the entire company’s view but perhaps just the one branch she had contacted.
In response to Niresh’s question about the boundaries between a Muslim and a non-Muslim woman, many Muslim netizens have shared a few opinions. Most of them had quoted the fatwa (a formal ruling of Islamic laws by muftis) which states that the ‘aurat’ of a Muslim woman should still be protected from non-Muslim women. This could explain why the specific beauty parlour branch did not accept non-Muslim customers. However, some argue that the rule was just unnecessary policing of religious boundaries.
While Niresh did not outright accuse the beauty parlour of discrimination, she does bring up the question of whether companies have the right to reject customers based on their religion.
