Our Malaysian talents continue to show their creativity in their latest projects. Local rapper Mimifly, also known as Mimi, recently released the music video for her latest single, “Angkat”, which received praise for its inclusion of the Malaysian sign language.
The music video was released on Mimifly’s YouTube channel on 28th December 2024 and immediately gained traction for its creative theme. The rapper had previously teased the music video, giving a sneak peek at her dancers and her outfits, designed by local designers. The music video was filmed at a traditional Malay house and included themes of Malay culture. The song also sampled “Angkat Kaki”, a track from local dangdut singer Sheeda.

However, fans are raving about one particular detail of the music video. Soon after the video premiered, many noticed that Mimifly was using Malaysian sign language as part of the choreography. As shown in the video, the 38-year-old, alongside her dancers, was signing the lyrics to the song. According to the credits, the choreography was done by Mimifly and choreographer Ayana Mansor, who also appeared in the music video.
The move earned the public figure many praises from fans and fellow celebrities alike. Stars like Hunny Madu, Ning Baizura and Aisha Retno shared their kudos to the star, applauding Mimifly and Ayana’s creativity. Many also praised the other elements of the music video, saying they adored how the singer highlighted traditional Malay culture. Others said they look forward to seeing Mimifly perform the song live, hoping to see more of the choreography.
Hype Malaysia has reached out to Mimifly to ask her about what went into producing the music video and the choreography. According to the star, she got the inspiration to include sign language in the choreography after seeing sign language students practice signing during a class at the same studio where she teaches yoga. “As I watched them practise signing, it hit me, ‘This is choreography’,” said the singer. She also shared an anecdote about the production of “Angkat”, revealing that it was her first time handling the entire process as an independent artist.

Mimifly also expressed gratitude towards her team and the public, thanking them for their support and love for her comeback track. “The response has been amazing and is better than I imagined and for that, I’m so grateful,” she told Hype. Congratulations to Mimifly on the release of her “Angkat” music video – and we can’t wait to see more of her in 2025! “Angkat” is now available on all music streaming platforms and YouTube.
