(Video) Light Pillar Seen In Johor Bahru Sky; Netizens Speculate On What It Was

It’s always exciting to witness a rare natural phenomenon at least once in our lives. We’ve had some bizarre occurrences in Malaysia in recent months – like the time people spotted elephants climbing up tall hills for some strange reasons. Prior to that, there was also the time when lightning struck the Merdeka 118 tower.

Some had the opportunity to witness a rare natural phenomenon that occurred in the night sky early yesterday morning (Sunday, 26th March), and here’s how they all reacted:

At around 6am on a Sunday morning, a strange bright light appeared in the sky which can be seen basically throughout Johor Bahru. Many posted the unfamiliar illumination on social media saying they were astounded yet had no idea what it was. According to several local news outlets, the phenomenon that many witnessed that day is known as a Light Pillar.

In short, light pillars are atmospheric optical phenomena that developed as a result of ice crystals slowly falling through the air, reflecting the sun’s rays off of them. Netizens were amazed at the rare sight as, of course, this does not usually happen, especially in Malaysia.

Apart from expressing their excitement about seeing such an unusual yet beautiful view, many posted some pretty interesting and funny comments about what the light in the sky could have also meant for the world. Here are some of our favourite reactions:

For your information, the last time a light pillar was seen in the skies of Malaysia was back in January earlier this year, and prior to that, back in 2014. Both occurrences were reportedly seen throughout Sabah and Sarawak. Sadly, unlike other natural phenomena, these pretty lights cannot be detected by radar so there is no specific way of predicting when they might appear again.

However, it is said that if one can predict cold and calm conditions, one can probably forecast when a light pillar is able to be seen. We’re hoping to catch the next one when it comes, whenever that may be.
