Very recently, netizens were enraged that a local sambal brand copied from food influencer Khairulaming’s famous Sambal Nyet Berapi brand. According to the influencer, he and his lawyers have taken legal action against the brand – but netizens are now using his case to question another local food seller.

Twitter user Picky recently shined the spotlight on the KEXFC fried chicken stall that appears to be a copy of the international fast food chain KFC. In the photos he shared, the KEXFC stall appeared to have many similarities to KFC, from the colour scheme down to the logo, which also features a man with a beard. In his captions, the Twitter user asked, “Is it legal in this case? Can any IP expert explain? Name like KFC, colour like KFC, sell chicken, (and) the mascot is the same.”

Many netizens have reacted to the tweet, showing mixed reactions to the fried chicken stall. Many slammed the owner, calling him out for blatant copyright infringement. Some also said KFC could sue the stall since they’re copying from the brand. However, many netizens also supported KEXFC, perhaps in light of the recent boycott towards KFC. Some even asked where they could find the stall, noting that the prices were cheaper than the original.

Following the outcry, the owner of KEXFC has come out to explain that the copying was intentional but for a reason. Shukrie Rahim, also known as Boss Shukex, is the CEO of a telecommunication company and has recently gone viral for building a water park at home. In a TikTok video, Shukrie explained that the copying was intentional as it’s part of the food stalls at his at-home water park. He said he was merely parodying the famous fast-food chain to add a sense of fun for those at his water park.

The video stated that the stall was meant only as furnishing and not an actual business. However, Shukrie mentioned that he will launch KEXFC as a real business with a different branding. The entrepreneur also mentioned that he has registered KEXFC for copyright, so it most likely won’t feature the same logo or branding shown.

It’s good that the owner clarified the issue – but what do you think about KEXFC? Do you think the brand will do well once it launches?
