We’ve seen many cases of plagiarism this year, from oil giant Petronas copying homegrown brand Oh Sebenar to local designer Christy Ng copying designs from several luxury fashion houses. Now, netizens are calling out a Shopee seller for copying the Sambal Nyet Berapi from beloved social media influencer Khairul Amin, a.k.a Khairulaming.
Twitter user @/cheajibsayang shared about a new sambal brand Sambal Nyet Khairi, poking fun at its striking resemblance to Khairul’s highly popular Sambal Nyet Berapi. The sambal not only shares a similar name and logo as Sambal Nyet Berapi, but the netizen has also pointed out that the ‘thank you card’ included in each order was also a copy from Khairul’s brand.
Many netizens have reacted to the blatant plagiarism of the sambal brand, voicing their disappointment towards the sambal seller. Even local content creator Ceddy Ang shared his opinion, tweeting about the plagiarism, “Aduh! Just do an honest business, don’t copy exactly…”. Some netizens even tagged Khairul Amin in the tweet, urging him to take legal action against the sambal brand and sue them for infringing copyright.
It is unknown who Khairi is nor his intentions for copying the entire brand image of Sambal Nyet Berapi. However, some netizens have even pointed out that the product is misleading customers after buyers of Sambal Nyet Khairi said they bought the condiment, believing it was the original from Khairul Amin. Many also lament that this is another case of a local business copying from successful brands for instant profit.
Khairul Amin has yet to address this issue – but we hope he will take appropriate action against the Shopee seller.
