If you’ve watched TVB dramas from the 1990s to the 2010s, you’ll be familiar with Mak Cheung Ching (麦长青), a.k.a Evergreen Mak. While the actor has shifted his career focus to Mainland China, he recently appeared in a new Hong Kong variety show, where he candidly shared about his family.
Mak Cheung Ching and fellow actor Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) recently hosted a short variety series for TVB titled “See You In Jianghu (江湖見)”. In a recent episode, the two longtime friends sat by a campfire and shared life stories. One topic mentioned was about their biggest regrets in life. Mak Cheung Ching started tearing up as he answered that his biggest regret was not spending more time with his brother.

Early in his 38-year career, Mak Cheung Ching faced financial problems and had to use credit cards to make ends meet. His parents and his brother all suffered health problems, with his mother and brother being diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, the actor got into a lot of debt because of all their medical expenses. Despite taking years to pay off the debt, Mak Cheung Ching never complained and continued working hard for his family.
However, as the actor revealed, he regretted not being able to spend time with his brother because of his busy schedule. His brother reportedly passed away many years ago after succumbing to cancer. Mak Cheung Ching said, “I thought about doing many things with him when he grows up. But God suddenly told me that you didn’t have the chance. After my brother passed away, I cherished him even more.”.

Mak Cheung Ching also told his friend, “I never told my brother that I love him, but I loved him very much. So, what I want to say to you is, brother, I love you.”. After sharing that sweet moment, Wayne revealed a similar regret, saying his biggest regret is that his mother couldn’t see his achievements before her death. As she passed away before his first major acting award, the star lamented that his mother never got to see him become successful.
While Mak Cheung Ching’s brother and Wayne’s mother are no longer by their side physically, we’re sure they’re looking after them spiritually. Watch their emotional talk below:
