It’s unfortunate when someone takes it too far when making a joke – but is that what happened in this case? Chinese singer Joker Xue (薛之谦) recently received backlash from netizens after many claimed he was making inappropriate comments towards two female concert-goers.
The 41-year-old recently performed at a concert in China when he interacted with two female fans in the audience. This interaction is a part of his show where the crew randomly picks people from the crowd to speak to the singer between performances. However, during this particular interaction, netizens claimed that Joker went too far with his comments.
According to a Weibo post, the singer praised the first fan on her looks, saying, “You’re very fair”, in a rather flirty manner. He also complimented her on her features, like her beauty marks. His following comment caused the most backlash because upon seeing scratch marks on the second fan’s neck, Joker jokingly asked, “You must have a cat at home, right? Did you get scratched by a cat? Was it a cat or a human?”
While it’s unsure what the singer’s intentions were, many netizens believed that the comments had a sexual undertone. This led them to criticise Joker, accusing him of being too vulgar with his jokes and disrespecting his female fans. Some also noted that the fans looked uncomfortable after hearing what Joker said, evoking more backlash towards the public figure.
However, some fans defended the star, arguing that the comment wasn’t sexual and that netizens misinterpreted the situation. Some also brought up a clarification, allegedly from the fan, saying that her uncomfortable expression was because she was nervous to talk to the singer. As of reporting, Joker has yet to comment on the matter.
