When someone visits Malaysia, there is one fruit that is often recommended. It is none other than Malaysia’s King of Fruits — durian. Durians might not be for everyone due to its strong flavour and smell, however, visitors are still encouraged to try them at least once.
Recently, Liang Zi (靓子), an influencer from China, shared on Douyin a video of her trying durian with rice. This video caught the attention of netizens and started many discussions among them.
On 25th April 2023, Liang Zi shared her experience trying one of the cultural ways of eating durian — with rice. In the video, she first stopped by a durian stall in SS2, Petaling Jaya to pick out a durian. She requested for a Musang King (猫山王) and eventually bought one for the price of RM90.
After, the influencer headed to a mamak store and ordered a plate of nasi lemak rice. She then proceeded to use her hands to try durian with rice for the first time. At first bite, she said that it was really hard to explain the taste. “Because (of the rice), the durian became warm, I think it’s really weird.”
“I’m not used to it. I think I prefer eating durians by itself,” Liang Zi added after trying a couple of bites. She even asked the Malaysian community for help, asking if she messed up somewhere.
Upon seeing the video, netizens eventually shared their thoughts on this. Quite a few netizens commented that it is way nicer to just eat durian with plain white rice. Whereas, others gave her suggestions on how to enjoy durian with rice.
- “It’s most delicious when you eat it with plain white rice, we count that as a meal when we have durians with rice.”
- “The rice needs to (be) hot, and the durians need to be cold for it to be tasty.”
- “Durian with rice is really delicious, my dad told us to eat it that way when I was young but he doesn’t like eating it that way. He’ll leave the house whenever we eat it. This is because we can only afford a couple of durians. Everyone will feel really full after.
Although Liang Zi commented that she was not accustomed to eating durians with rice, we’re glad that she is willing to try something that is different from her culture. We hope that she would take into account what netizens have shared with her and give durian with rice another chance.
