The “Like Jennie” dance challenge continues to be all the rage with netizens, with tons of celebrities and netizens sharing their covers of Jennie’s (제니) hit song. Most recently, our very own Aisha Retno and Mimifly joined the bandwagon, adding a local twist to the challenge.
The two recently jointly posted on Instagram, sharing their version of the BLACKPINK (블랙핑크) member’s dance challenge with the world. In the video, the two stars pulled off all the steps from the viral choreography. However, the pair wowed fans by taking on the powerful moves while dressed in a Kebaya and Baju Kurung. Both Aisha and Mimifly also wore heels while doing the challenge, adding another level of difficulty.
Since the traditional garments and the heels can be a little restricting, especially for the “Like Jennie” choreography and its big movements, many fans were impressed at how Aisha and Mimifly pulled it off. Aisha also seemed pleased with the results, writing in the captions, “i think i rlly like us in kebaya n baju kurung hehe”. Mimifly then quipped about the outfits, responding, “Our clothes were tight but game face on.”
The video has amassed hundreds of thousands of views on Instagram and TikTok. Both fans and fellow celebrities have reacted to the video, showering Aisha and Mimifly with praises. While some pointed out the subtle differences in the pair’s dance types, many agreed they worked well together. Some also said they hope to see more collaborations between the two stars, noting their synergy in the dance challenge.
Of course, “Like Jennie” isn’t the only TikTok challenge going viral amongst Malaysians. Mimifly’s recent Hari Raya hit “Serumpum” also made waves on social media after its release, with the song’s sign-language choreography sparking a dance challenge. Funnily, a comedic remix of the track dubbed “Sesampul” also recently went viral, drawing attention for its edited lyrics.
It was refreshing to see Jennie’s powerful choreography performed in our traditional Malaysian garments. Kudos to Aisha Retno and Mimifly for their dance challenge – and we hope to see a collaboration between the two soon!
