There have been many reports of explosions or buildings catching on fire in recent years. We can only imagine the horror and panic the victims or passersby must’ve felt in that moment. Unfortunately, another fire outbreak has been reported.

Twitter user @_ammz_ posted a video of an incident that occurred yesterday (Thursday, 13th April) at the outdoor parking bay nearby Suria KLCC where 13 motorcycles and 4 electric scooters suddenly caught on fire. According to the netizen, a delivery rider asked a nearby guard to fetch a fire extinguisher but unfortunately, he was too stunned to react quickly and the fire began to spread.

Fortunately, help arrived to control the situation. According to the statement released by the Fire and Rescue Department on Facebook, they received a distress call at around 3:46pm. It was reported that a total of 15 firefighters from the Jalan Tun Razak and Keramat fire stations arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames. “The fire was put out at 4:04pm,” said Chief Iqbal Khan Malek Khan.

It was said that 9 out of 13 motorcycles along with the 4 e-scooters were completely destroyed while the remaining 4 bikes suffered minor damages. Thankfully, no bike owners nor members of the public were harmed during the incident.

At the time of writing, neither the Fire and Rescue Department nor Suria KLCC have released statements on what could’ve caused the vehicles to catch fire as it is still being investigated. However, some netizens speculated that one of the motorcycles may have overheated under the sun.

Here’s a reminder to all to please exercise caution when faced with a dangerous situation and immediately contact the Malaysia Emergency Response Services for help.

Update (Saturday, 15th April)

Beam, the company behind the e-scooters involved in the incident, released a statement to clarify that their scooters did not cause the fire after being confirmed by authorities. “We express our deepest sympathies with the owners of the other private motorcycles that were damaged by the fire. We applaud the authorities for their quick response to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading and causing further damage,” they wrote.
