The “Battlestar Galactica: Human vs Cylon” ride at Universal Studios Singapore, the world’s tallest duelling rollercoaster, suffered a technical error yesterday (Wednesday, 6th April) afternoon, leaving some parkgoers stuck in mid-air.
According to TODAY, citing Resorts World Sentosa, the incident happened at about 4pm. “Standard operating procedures were followed to evacuate riders safely from the lower section of the ride. The safety of our guests is our top priority and a thorough routine safety check was completed before we resumed the ride at 5.08pm,” a spokesperson said.
The spokesperson did not how many riders were stuck on the rollercoaster or how long it took to evacuate the riders, but Straits Times quoted a visitor, who only wanted to be known as Mira, as saying that the entire ordeal lasted for about 20 minutes.
“I was really scared as I myself had been on the ride twice earlier in the day. Now, after seeing this incident, I won’t ever go on it again,” Mira said.
The “Battlestar Galactica: Human vs Cylon” ride provides 2 different coaster experiences with the on-going “battle” between the Humans and Cylons. Launched at high speeds with loops and inversion, the ride received rave reviews from coaster fans.
However, despite being one of Universal Studios Singapore’s top attractions, it was closed for 11 months due to a technical problem in the design of the ride vehicles. The coaster went through extensive ride testing cycles to ensure that the newly reinforced cars are safe to operate. The ride was then opened officially on 21st Feb 2011 before being closed again in 2013.
Then, in May 2015, “Battlestar Galactica: Human vs Cylon” resumed operations, featuring new 2-seater cars instead of the previous 4-seater ones. The 2-seater cars promised “a more intimate and personal ride experience”.
