Online experiential travel guide, TasteAtlas is known for sharing its top worldwide food ranking from time to time. But, netizens have questioned the site’s credibility multiple times, especially after giving Malaysia’s nasi lemak dish a mid-rating as well as labelling two other local dishes as Singaporean and Indonesian dishes.

Many have criticised the website for being unreliable as the company has never disclosed how they evaluated these dishes from around the world. Still, that hasn’t stopped people from being happy if one of their dishes made it to the top of one of the guide’s Best In The World rankings.

Yesterday (Sunday, 10th September), TasteAtlas posted its updated ranking list of the best bread in the world with Malaysia’s iconic roti canai dish taking the no.1 spot! This ranking came as a surprise to many as the popular food guide website previously ranked the dish as the second-best street food in the world earlier this year.

Our local roti canai bested Colombia’s Pan de Bono (no. 2), India’s Butter Garlic Naan (no. 3) and Singapore’s Roti Prata (no. 12). Many Malaysians reacted to the Facebook post as well as the reposted list on Twitter. The reception to the news, without a doubt, has been mixed.

Comments on Facebook were mostly positive as netizens replied with celebratory and congratulatory messages on the post while those on Twitter, again, questioned the website’s credibility on how they carried out their evaluation. Some were even confused about the difference between roti canai and roti prata as they believed the two are basically the same dish.

At this point, we can conclude that people will never come to an agreement when it comes to TasteAtlas’s food rankings. Regardless, it’s still nice when a popular website recognises a country’s iconic dish, even if they are deemed as “unreliable” by netizens.

What do you think of the list this time around?
