Your grandmothers will probably always tell you to “eat slowly”, and for good reason. Malaysian doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong (陈文宏) apparently found that out the hard way recently while enjoying a delectable plate of fish.

Many love eating fish, but there is one danger that comes with the dish. Yup, fishbones. Unfortunately for Tan Boon Heong, he recently had a very nasty encounter with a fishbone and needed to fork out almost RM1500 to remove it from his throat!

Apparently, Boon Heong had been enjoying a delicious plate of steamed fish yesterday (17th October). According to the shuttler, he had paid RM34 for the dish, which he felt was reasonable. Unfortunately, he ended up paying more than that for his fish dish.

“(I) accidentally swallowed the fish bone,” he admitted in his Facebook post. “(It) was a big deal. (I had to) go to the hospital to get the fishbone (removed).” Boon Heong added he had paid RM1453.60 to remove the bone from his throat, and adding presumably the price of his meal, RM45, he ended up paying RM1498.60 for the entire fiasco, which was quite the blow to his wallet.

“Don’t eat fish if you are in a hurry. If you do want to eat fish, don’t (be impatient) about it,” he later said. Boon Heong also claimed that the incident had worsened the day overall for him. “Luckily, the insurance agent will soon be here to help me handle (the situation),” he stated.

Tan Boon Heong later claimed today (18th October) that he was being much more careful while eating fish. “(Learned) from (my) mistake,” he quipped in his recent post, showing him eating a bowl of noodles. Well, we certainly hope he continues to be careful in the future!

Here’s a glimpse of when his fishbone was removed:
