Steve Jobs Biopic: Production Begins; Filming Locations Include Jobs’ Real Garage

After Sony moved its Steve Jobs biopic to Universal Pictures, the film is no longer in development hell as it is now moving into the production stage. It seems like the production is set to bring more authenticity to the film by setting its filming location in the Apple co-founder’s hometown, California.

Danny Boyle is directing the film based on Aaron Sokrin’s screenplay, which Sorkin wrote based on Walter Isaacson’s biography. The biography was written at the request of Jobs and it includes more than 140 interviews with Jobs and his family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues.

Steve Jobs

And of course, Jobs wouldn’t leave out the fact that both his engineer friend Steve Wozniak and himself built the Apple I in his parents’ now-historic garage back in 1976 at Los Atlos, Crist  in California.

Situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, the garage is a real garage Jobs grew up with. The 2013 Steve Jobs biopic that starred Ashton Kutcher previously used it as a filming location. The production crew for Boyle’s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic is now carefully turning it into a movie set as well.

Steve Jobs Garage

CNET was given a look at the set and provided a description of the garage below:

Cinderblock and wood shelves are pieced together along the walls. Roller skates, a Thermos, an old vacuum cleaner and 8-track player and stereo lay haphazardly about. An advertisement for a Braun electric coffee maker hangs on the wall, as does a poster featuring Bob Dylan holding a “Get Born” sign from a film clip featuring the song “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. And the house itself has been painted a beige colour with darker tan trim, contrasting with the formerly lighter exterior.

The garage is also said to be a critical location for 3 major production introductions: the Macintosh computer in 1984, the NeXT computer in 1988, and the iPod in 2001.

So now, all we need is a first look at Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak. Katherine Waterston is set to portray Chrisann Brennan, Steve Jobs’ first wife while Jeff Daniels and Michael Stuhlbarg will portray former Apple CEO John Sculley and computer scientist Andy Hertzfeld respectively. Kate Winslet is said to be playing an unknown role.

Produced by Scott Rudin, Mark Gordon, and Guymon Casady, the untitled Jobs movie does not have a release date yet.
