Even if you’re not a super fan of “Spider-Man”, you would’ve heard the famous phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility”.
Those words were uttered by Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben. Although “Spider-Man: Homecoming” won’t feature the tragic death of Uncle Ben, the movie will explore the ramifications of his death.
Director Jon Watts explained that although the implication of Ben Parker’s death is present, he didn’t want the tragedy to clash with the tone of the film. “They talk about that, absolutely. It’s not… it’s not a huge thing that I want to go into too much, but there is an acknowledgment that there was a Ben,” said the filmmaker.
He added, “I mean, we’re implying he’s dead. We have not at all, again, gone into trying to change his origin story as far as I have been envisioning it. But we, just again, we thought that to keep this fun, light tone, as soon as they have to have their, like, ‘Let’s remember our dearly departed father figure’ – it derails that a little. And again, what we’re trying to tell is this sort of fun story of the kid who is doing all the wrong things for the right reasons. And once you do that, it stops becoming a sort of fun movie about a kid trying to be a kid. He’s mourning the loss of a parent.”
There’s no question that Uncle Ben’s passing will loom heavily on Peter Parker’s decisions. Having said that, it’s reassuring that “Spider-Man: Homecoming” won’t be re-telling a story that we’re already familiar with.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is expected to swing into theatres on 7th July 2017.
