Sony Pictures Ends Spider-Man Partnership With Marvel

News portal “Deadline” recently reported that Spider-Man will be swinging his way out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

According to a news, both Disney and Sony Pictures have failed to reach new terms, due to their month long dispute. As a result, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will no longer produce Spidey’s movies in the future.

From what we understand, the main reason of the argument was – money. Disney had requested for a 50/50 co-financing agreement on all future Spider-Man movies, which was against Sony’s agreement. In turn, Sony offered to keep the same arrangement under the current terms with Marvel receiving about 5% of first-dollar gross, with Disney rejecting the offer. As a result, they’ve decided to drop Disney and Marvel Studios, and will continue with the franchise alone.

Rumour has it that there are 2 more sequels in works, with familiar face Tom Holland set to return to reprise his role as Peter Parker. While Jon Watts is in talks to return to the director’s chair for the movie, Feige will not be the lead producer of those movies as Marvel Studios will apparently no longer have any future involvement in the Spider-Man universe.

Both Sony and Marvel have been making money thanks to the franchise, with the latest Spidey movie “Far From Home” (2019) surpassing the James Bond movie “Skyfall” (2012) to become Sony’s highest-grossing film of all time, with $1.1 billion profit in the box office.

Marvel fans took it the hard way when the news came out. The Twitter-ville was flooded with fans expressing their disappointment over the shocking announcement, along with the hashtag #SaveSpiderman trending worldwide. Check out some of their reactions below:
