SM Entertainment has debuted some of K-pop’s biggest girl groups, from S.E.S and Girls’ Generation to Red Velvet and aespa. Most recently, the entertainment agency announced they’re debuting a new girl group in 2025, which they believe will further solidify their lineup of idols.

The yet-to-be-named girl group has since been nicknamed SMNGG, which stands for “SM New Girl Group”. The girls will debut in the first quarter of next year, but K-pop fans have long tried to dig up information about these soon-to-debut stars. If you’re also curious about SMNGG, here are five fun facts about SM Entertainment’s new girl group:

The Group Reportedly Comprises Eight Members

While Girls’ Generation did debut in a larger set, having had nine members during their debut, most SM Entertainment’s girl groups are smaller in numbers (3-5). However, this new group is said to have eight members, with some rumours even suggesting 10 members at most. Insiders have even dubbed them “the second Girls Generation”, perhaps due to this similarity to their seniors.

The Rumoured Main Vocalist Is The Daughter Of A Popular Korean Singer

SM Entertainment hasn’t confirmed the identity of the members. However, one possible member is trainee Park Soyoon (박소윤). Born in 2005, Soyoon is the daughter of South Korean singer Park Sangmin (박상민). Since she had previously showcased her singing abilities on shows like “We Kid”, many believe Soyoon will be the group’s main vocalist.

Another Rumoured Member Is An Indonesian

Another popular rumoured member is Nyoman Ayu Carmenita, a.k.a Carmen (카르멘). This young trainee allegedly hails from Bali, Indonesia and has trained at SM Entertainment for over 2 years. If her debut is confirmed, she will become the first Indonesian idol under her company and only the second Southeast Asian after NCT/WayV’s Ten.

The Members’ Age Group Is Said To Be Around 20 And 17 Years Old

Understandably, K-pop idols are getting younger as the years go by – and this new group is no exception. Rumour has it that the members were born between 2005 and 2008, so they’re currently around 19 to 16 years old. However, as hinted by Red Velvet’s Seulgi and aespa’s Winter, these girls are pretty tall, so they might appear older and more mature than their age.

The Members Trained With aespa

Speaking of aespa, it’s rumoured that some of these girls had previously trained with their seniors, and one was even supposed to debut with the quartet. However, this is a common occurrence with SM Entertainment idols, like how NCT’s Johnny trained with EXO. Perhaps we can look forward to hearing some fun predebut anecdotes from the two groups.

According to reports, the new girl group will debut with a single album in early 2025. Are you ready to meet SM Entertainment’s newest idols?
