Hong Kong’s own “Heavenly King” Andy Lau (刘德华) was recently in the spotlight for a dramatic reason. At his Shanghai concert, the star nearly took a dangerous fall from a 4-metre-high platform. The incident had fans and friends on edge, but it also revealed a tender and unexpected side of the singer’s personal life through a conversation with his wife, Carol Chu (朱丽倩).
In the aftermath of the near-disaster, Tiffany Chen (向太陳嵐), a long-time friend and Hong Kong film producer, reached out to Carol Chu to express her concern. In their conversation, Tiffany conveyed her dismay and advised Carol that she had warned Andy to avoid performing such risky stunts in the future.
Carol, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, shared her thoughts on the incident and Andy’s remarkable reflexes. “Yeah, everyone’s hearts dropped. Luckily, he held onto the floor with his hands to ‘brake’ in time. Andy has quick reflexes which were honed from his early days as an actor. If he was just a singer, he probably would have fallen off. Many other people also called the Heavenly King and urged him to stop performing such dangerous stunts after that night,” Carol said.
The conversation took a more personal turn when Carol revealed her endearing nickname for Andy. In a voice message to Tiffany, Carol said, “Everyone knows you’re really close to ‘Niu’ [Chinese for ‘cow’]! That’s why they approached you. They were just hoping you could help convince ‘Niu’ to stop engaging in such dangerous acts.”

The nickname “Niu,” which translates to “cow” in Chinese, might initially seem unusual compared to more common terms of endearment like “baby” or “honey.” However, this affectionate moniker has deeper roots connected to the singer’s Chinese Zodiac sign. Born in 1966, Andy’s birth year corresponds to the Year of the Ox, a sign symbolising hard work, strength, and reliability.
Netizens have speculated that the nickname is a loving nod to Andy’s Zodiac sign. The ox is celebrated for its steadfastness and diligence, traits that reflect the singer’s dedication and resilience throughout his illustrious career. Let’s hope the singer will have a smooth show when he performs in KL soon.
