South Korean actor Cha Ji-hyuk, who gained recognition through the Netflix series Bloodhounds 2, will take on a leading role in Distinct: Becoming Sarawak, a feature film set to be shot entirely in Sarawak.

As reported by Sarawak Tribune, production is expected to begin on 15 June. The project is designed to encourage cross-border collaboration between South Korean and Malaysian creatives while highlighting the state’s diverse cultural landscape.

Cha will be joined in the lead cast by local actresses Siti Nur Aishah Bee Mh Nor and Shelyn Poh, with the story centred on themes of love, healing, and identity.

Described as a romantic comedy, the project unfolds across Sarawak’s urban settings, cultural heritage, and natural scenery, aiming to present international audiences with a new perspective of the state.

Built around the concept that differences can unite people, the film will reflect Sarawak’s multicultural society where diverse communities coexist while maintaining their own identities.

It will also feature Kuching and other locations across Sarawak, showcasing modern urban life, creative environments, local traditions, and genuine community experiences.

A partnership in storytelling

A collaborative effort between South Korea’s Monster Factory Co. Ltd. and Malaysia’s The Black Label Sdn Bhd, the film brings together production teams from both countries.

Helmed by director Shin Ji-hwan and written by Park Ho-young, the project is supported by an experienced Korean crew handling cinematography, sound, lighting, and music.

Producer and Chief Executive Officer of The Black Label Sdn Bhd, Lee Sang Chan, said Sarawak is more than just scenic landscapes.

“Sarawak possesses stories, emotions and a unique energy that give this film its identity and create a meaningful connection with audiences.”

He further explained that a key goal of the project is to introduce Kuching and Sarawak to global viewers while also promoting tourism.

“I hope this film will become a bridge connecting Sarawak with audiences around the world and inspire more people to discover this remarkable place,” he added.

Korean directors, actors, and crew have been based in Kuching since 1 June, carrying out extensive pre-production work while helping to strengthen creative industry ties between South Korea and Malaysia.

The project is also supported locally by Semarak Kreatif Sdn Bhd, headed by Azri Ali, Qawiem Hamizan, and Hanis Ali, who are working in close collaboration with their Korean counterparts.

Lee noted that the partnership is expected to open up opportunities for Malaysian actors, crew, and creative professionals, while also laying the groundwork for future Korean productions in Malaysia.
