The Hong Kong entertainment scene is in mourning over the loss of a theatre and screen icon. Chung King Fai (鍾景輝), affectionately known as King Sir, has passed away. He was 89.
Chung King Fai’s nephew shared the devastating news on 3rd June 2026 (Wednesday), announcing that the actor passed away peacefully in his sleep at home earlier that morning. The family are currently making funeral arrangements and will share more details on the funeral and memorial service on a later date.

A familiar face in Hong Kong cinema and television, Chung King Fai’s biggest contribution to the scene is founding the legendary TVB Artiste Training Class. The late star proposed the program to address the shortage of formally trained screen talents. The program was a success and paved the way for many renowned stars like Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung.
Chung King Fai is also a revered figure in Hong Kong theatre and was instrumental in introducing Western drama to Cantonese-speaking audiences. Over the course of his career, he directed and performed in more than 100 stage productions. The actor also co-founded several theatre companies and institutions, including the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre.

While Chung King Fai died of natural causes, his health had noticeably declined in recent years. In 2016, the theatre director underwent treatment and surgery for colorectal cancer. The treatment was a success, but his health gradually declined, leading him to reduce his workload and public appearances.
Following his death, many of his students and peers paid tribute to him through social media. Actor and comedian Wong Cho Lam shared a lengthy post on Instagram, sharing how Chung King Fai’s teachings helped shape Hong Kong’s showbiz scene, with many new talents still following his training.

During a recent interview, actress Nancy Sit also expressed sadness over Chung King Fai’s death, saying she was stunned when she received the news. However, she noted his positive impact on Hong Kong’s entertainment scene. The actress also thanked him for his contributions, sharing how dedicated the late actor was to his craft and his students.
With decades of experience under his belt and thousands of stars as his students, Chung King Fai’s influence in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry is undeniable. We extend our condolences to his loved ones. May they find solace during this difficult time, and may he rest in peace.
