If you’re a commuter who uses the LRT (light rail transit) and monorail frequently, we’ve got news for you.

Prime Minister Mohd Najib Tun Razak has announced that all commuters would be able to enjoy a 50% discount on their daily commute if they travel between 6am – 7am starting from 16th September.

The move was implemented to encourage commuters to travel before rush hour, and to reduce the crowd during peak hours. The Prime Minister announced this during the launch of LRT3 project in Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam.

He also revealed several details about LRT3, which will benefit approximately 2 million people. The system, expected to be completed by 2020, will be 37km-long, and connects 26 stations from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia. Construction is slated to begin in early 2017, and will be integrated with the existing MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), KTM Komuter, BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), and Kelana Jaya Line LRT systems.

The public transportation system has undergone a number of changes in recent years, most notably the LRT system and the introduction of the MRT trains. The Kelana Jaya and Sri Petaling LRT extensions were opened on 30th June, while the merging system of the Sri Petaling and Ampang lines were axed on 17th July. The MRT system is also expected to be completed by 2018.
