Planning on taking a ride on our new MRT line any time soon? Well, maybe you should! After all, not only will you be able to check out the new line for yourself, you’ll be able to ride it for free too!

As most citizens will know, Rapid KL will be launching its new Putrajaya MRT line today (16th March). With this line, residents in Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya will be able to hitch a ride at their own convenience.

The line will be officially opened at 3pm today. And luckily, it seems we won’t just be getting a convenient ride. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stated that until 31st March, all rides on the Putrajaya MRT line are free! Feeder buses going to the new line will offer free rides too.

“So, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing can take (his) passengers back and forth without paying,” the minister quipped. Jokes aside, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim claims they will prioritising public transport during the next annual federal budget. “Next year will be for transport, because people lose productivity thanks to traffic congestion,” he stated.

The Putrajaya MRT line has 36 stations with nine underground. Ten of these stops are also interchange stations and connecting stations. As such, travelers will be able to find their way around KL with ease. Said line is also expected to serve 104,000 commuters each day. A full one-way trip will reportedly take about one hour and thirty minutes with trains running every 4 minutes during peak hours and seven to ten minutes during non-peak hours.

The free rides on the Putrajaya MRT line will be effective today after the line officially opens. A Prasarana representative reassured that the free rides apply to anyone entering or exiting the network through stations on the Putrajaya MRT Line. Token users will require a special token from the counter for the free ride.

Well, it seems it might be time to take a quick trip around KL for the month of March. Hope you guys enjoy your free rides!
