In a letter sent to Kajang Prison Director, Mohd Sharin bin Hj Sabtu, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) urged him to implement a vegan meals policy for inmates, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak.
PETA Asia President, Jason Baker explained that going vegan in prison can reduce strain on public funds and promote empathy among inmates.

“With so much violence in the prisoners’ lives, let’s make sure it ends at mealtime. Will you please implement a vegan meals policy in Kajang Prison, for the former Prime Minister Najib Razak and other inmates?”
“Prisons that serve vegan meals report calmer populations and major savings. A jail in the US reported a cost reduction of over RM1.1 million when it switched to all-vegetarian food for its inmates, who thrived eating fresh, quality food. Vegan menus also slash healthcare costs, since animal-free foods protect against diet-related diseases. vegan foods promote empathy and non-violence,” he wrote.
Cruelty-free meals = Peaceful prisons?

In the letter, Baker further emphasised that introducing vegan meals in the prison could help foster a more compassionate environment, and even offered to develop vegan menu options for Kajang Prison.
“By refusing to serve the products of cruelty, prisons can help stop the cycle of violence. Malaysia, with its rich cultural heritage and increasing focus on sustainable and healthy living, is uniquely positioned to lead correctional reform in the region by prioritising compassionate dining,”
“After all, the only peaceful meal is a vegan one. By offering vegan meals in Kajang Prison, Malaysia can show the world that peace is possible — even in the hardest places. We would gladly assist your agency in creating balanced vegan menus,” he added.
