Pulau Pinang, known as Penang, is a state in northwest Malaysia comprising the mainland Seberang Perai and Penang Island. Due to its proximity to waterways, the Penang Ferry Service has been a key attraction for both travellers and locals since its inception in 1894, making it the oldest ferry service in Malaysia. The fleet of six iconic ferries transported passengers and vehicles across the Penang Strait daily, with automobiles accommodated on the lower deck or both decks.

However, not many are aware of the rich history of ferry services in Malaysia and that could lead to the fading of this important piece of heritage, especially since the Penang Ferry Service ceased operations on 31st December 2021. The iconic ferries were then replaced by faster passenger boats, raising concerns about the preservation of this historical legacy for future generations. In response, the Penang Ferry Museum is being established to ensure that the rich history of the ferry service lives on. Visitors will be able to explore the golden age of the ferries and their significance to Penang’s culture and transportation.

What sets this museum apart is that it will be Asia’s first floating museum. One of Penang’s iconic ferries is currently being refurbished and restored by Printhero Merchandise (M) Sdn Bhd, a company well-known for managing souvenir shops at popular tourist destinations such as Muzium Negara and Muzium Perak. A unique feature of the museum will be its depiction of 79 comic characters, strategically positioned to mimic passengers looking out the windows—capturing a nostalgic image of the ferry’s past. In addition to the exhibits, the museum will house souvenir shops, a café, and scenic photography spots—all located on the historic ferry itself.

The ferry will be towed across the Penang Strait from Bagan Dalam, Butterworth, to the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT), before being permanently stationed at Tanjung City Marina, where it will serve as The Penang Ferry Museum. As for the other old ferries, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Undan, they are currently being scrapped. Meanwhile, two others—Pulau Paya and Pulau Angsa—are set to be repurposed for tourism. Pulau Paya, now docked at Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda, is expected to be transformed into a restaurant, while Pulau Angsa will be used for other tourism ventures.

The Penang Ferry Museum has yet to announce an exact opening date but it’s expected to open by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, the public and media are invited to witness the historic moment as the last ferry crosses the KTMB Swing Bridge following the closure of the Bagan Dalam Slipway. Although many may feel a sense of loss at no longer being able to board the iconic ferry, the new museum will allow locals and visitors alike to once again step aboard and learn more about the beloved vessels that once ruled the Penang Strait.
