When it comes to Asia, some would immediately think of crystalline beaches, lush rainforests, and other spectacular tropical wonders. However, it can also be an ideal destination for a winter vacation.

Maybe you’re after the perfect white powder snow for skiing, the ideal conditions for a snowman, or just the crunch of crisp snow underfoot when you’re walking, while also not wanting to cause a dent in your wallet. Here are some recommendations for places to visit around Asia to get the best winter snow:

Harbin, China

They don’t call Harbin “Ice City” for nothing. This northeastern Chinese city is renowned for the Harbin International Ice Festival, which runs every year, showcasing massive ice palaces, intricate sculptures, and gravity-defying towers from blocks of ice harvested straight from the Songhua River. There are tons of wintry experiences that can be enjoyed in the city, such as ice-cold river swims, sledging and snowmobile rides, ice lantern shows, and watching safari-style Siberian Tigers.

Located on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan, Niseko is famous for its incredibly light and fluffy snow, which attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the world. The town is also jam-packed with attractions and sights that will make your trip even more exciting and fun, including Arishima Memorial Centre, Kanrosui, and Niseko Ohashi Bridge.

With affordable hotel accommodations and fewer crowds, the place can be popular for budget travellers and backpackers in winter. While it can be rather chilly, the city has a lineup of festivals that can add colour and fun to your winter escape, like the Butter Oil Lantern Festival, Tibetan New Year, and Great Prayer Festival.

When winter arrives, Sa Pa becomes more poetic than ever. Terraced rice fields, forests, and mountain peaks are blanketed in a pristine layer of snow, creating a stunning, rare sight. Located in northwest Vietnam, some of the best things to do in the town include hiking up Fansipan Mountain, exploring the traditional Cat Cat Village, and admiring spectacular landscapes at Heaven’s Gate.

Winter in Kashmir is the season of snowfall, powdery snow runs, cosy fireplaces, and gondola rides. From skiing in Gulmarg and snow treks through Sonamarg, to charming winter festivals and snowball fights, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you engaged. The place is said to offer the closest Himalayan views compared to other destinations in India.
