Whisky + coffee? Yes, please.
No stranger to award-winning single malts and its masterful blends, Japanese whisky brand Nikka released the “Coffey Series” which includes 2 different types of blends: a single grain whisky – Nikka Coffey Grain, and a 100% malt whisky – Nikka Coffey Malt – using the unique Coffey distillation.
To create an experience like no other and to truly reveal the beauty of these whiskies and its versatility, local importer Tong Woh Enterprise Sdn Bhd (TWE), enlisted the help of notable mixologist Angel Ng to take invitees on a tasting journey like no other.
The tasting which took place at Eau De Vie, Nexus Bangsar South on 11th August, saw Angel lead the tasting of both whisky expressions, and also create 2 Coffey series cocktails.
As explained by Angel, the Nikka Coffey Malt is the result of a unique distillation process in “Coffey” type column stills, which are usually used for grain whiskey production. While it is produced from 100% malt in a single distillery, it is not considered as single malt because of its Coffey style distillation. The Nikka Coffey Malt offers a rich texture with deep oaky notes and it’s delightfully fruity and spicy with hints of pear, pepper and balsamic notes.
As for the Nikka Coffey Grain, it’s an original single grain whisky, distilled mainly from corn in a Coffey still. Mellow and fruity, the whisky’s sweetness also holds citrus, papaya, coconut and cinnamon notes.
Both ready to drink on it’s own, our personal favourite was the Nikka Coffey Malt as it had a much richer taste to it. For those who aren’t big whisky drinkers, the Nikka Coffey series also works well for cocktails.
