The prices for fast food restaurants have been a concern of many Malaysians lately, ever since former Prime Minister Najib Razak commented on the increased price of McDonald’s menu items. Since then, many netizens have been on the lookout for fast food restaurants suddenly increasing their prices.

Earlier this week, a food-centric Twitter account shared a surprising revelation about the prices of KFC menu items, specifically their combo plates. As of reporting, the price for the Snack Plate Combo meal is RM20.99, while the Dinner Plate Combo meal costs RM25.99. However, according to the tweet, the price of the Snack Plate and the Dinner Plate was once RM11.90 and RM14.90, although there was no mention of when these prices were from.

However, a forum post, dated back in December 2022, showed that the prices of these two items were still lower than the current ones, at RM16.49 and RM21.60. A Penang-based Facebook page also shared prices for these two meals in 2018, noting that the Snack Plate Combo and the Dinner Plate Combo were RM15.30 and RM19.60 then. KFC did address their price increase a few years ago, stating the rising cost of ingredients as the reason.

Nevertheless, netizens were still shocked at how much the prices for these combo meals have increased over the years. Many shared their thoughts, with most saying that the price increase is disheartening, especially to those in the B40 and M40 income bracket. Some even noted that with such prices, fast food meals will remain a luxury to many lower-income families. A few commenters also spoke about how Malaysians still receive low wages despite the increasing cost of living.

KFC does offer a cheaper meal alternative as part of the Menu Rahmah initiative, costing only RM5 – but what do you think about the price increase? Would you still consider the meals a luxury? Or is it fitting with current food prices?
