Netizens Discuss Why Some Local Businesses Prefer To Maintain As ‘Cash-Only’ Instead Of Going Cashless

As Malaysia’s digital payment infrastructure develops, more businesses –  even roadside stalls – offer cashless payment options. However, many small businesses still prefer to accept only cash, which can frustrate those living the cashless lifestyle.

One Twitter user, @/nisayahyaa, voiced her dissatisfaction with cash-only businesses in a tweet that wrote, “I’m so annoyed with cash-only shops. Are you a foreigner? Don’t you have a bank account?”. Albeit a little harsh, the woman’s tweet argued that since many Malaysians opt to go cashless, businesses should offer the option to pay via card, bank transfer or eWallet.

The tweet garnered tons of attention, with netizens sharing both perspectives on the argument. Many agreed with the tweet, also voicing their disappointment when businesses in the city don’t accept cashless payments. Many also complain that even when businesses offer bank transfers, some don’t provide QR codes. Some even argue that cash-only businesses are “red flags” because the owner may be evading tax, or the store may be a front for money laundering.

However, others slammed the Twitter user, calling her entitled for not being more understanding towards business owners. One netizen said cash payments are better for elderly business owners to avoid being victims of scam cases involving QR code payments. Some also pointed out that cashless payments require Internet access, which isn’t always available in some areas like small towns. Additionally, older folks (our parent’s generation) may not have access to WiFi. Others say that small businesses often use cash for other transactions, like buying stock and paying wages, and cash payments help ease their work.

Of course, cashless only isn’t the best option either, as proven by a Singaporean man who couldn’t treat his friends because of a Chinese restaurant’s cashless-only policy – but what do you think about this? Should all businesses offer cashless payment?
