M’sians Triggered After Former Canadian Minister Claims SG Nasi Lemak As “Most Delicious Breakfast”

Malaysia and Singapore have always been at each other’s throats when it comes to which country has the best food. There was even a viral video last year where a British TikToker claimed that Singapore’s nasi lemak is better than Malaysia’s.

While most, if not all Malaysians disagreed with her statement, apparently there’s one person who shares the same sentiment as the TikToker, only this time, she’s a former Canadian government official.

— Catherine McKenna (@cathmckenna) June 5, 2023

Catherine McKenna, a former Canadian Environment Minister was recently in Singapore for the 2023 Ecosperity Week. During her visit, she tweeted that she had nasi lemak for breakfast, which she claimed to be the “most delicious” breakfast in the country, along with a photo of her meal. The post which was originally shared on 6th June went viral over the weekend, possibly due to the whole Jocelyn Chia fiasco.

The post may seem innocent enough but it unsurprisingly sparked a heated debate among netizens on Twitter, especially those from Malaysia. Many told her that Malaysia’s nasi lemak is way better, suggesting that the meal she posted didn’t even look like the iconic dish. Others, however, were getting sick of the ‘Malaysia vs Singapore’ discourse after what’s been going on recently.

Although some tweets were a bit harsh, the Canadian woman did not seem to take them to heart as she replied to some Malaysians’ tweets who recommended that she try nasi lemak in the neighbouring country. After her tweet went viral, Catherine tweeted that the nasi lemak debate was the best on Twitter as she got some really good recommendations on both Malaysia and Singaporea’s best dishes.

The former Canadian government official even humorously tried to translate her tweet, “Nasi lemak debate is the best of Twitter. Hands down,” in Malay as seen in the screenshot below. Glad she got some good recommendations out of the debate and we hope she gets to try the nasi lemak in our country one day. Only then can she truly compare the food between the two countries.
