The pandemic has taken its toll on the economy; both consumers and business owners alike are affected by it. Business owners have been increasing their products’ prices due to the pandemic and customers are forced to fork out more.

Having said that, some businesses have decided to take advantage of the situation and increase their prices more than it’s necessary. Many would call it daylight robbery; just like this restaurant in Perak.

Yesterday (6th February), a TikTok video posted by Afiq (@raidafiqz) went viral over social media platforms. The video was of him and his friends dining at Rumah Makan Sri Muallim in Tanjung Malim, Perak. From the video, it can be seen that it is no fancy one but an affordable nasi campur restaurant. After all, it’s nasi campur, how bad can it be?

However, when he revealed each price of their orders, netizens became alarmed. The cheapest food order on the table cost RM11.50, which had a plate of rice with a small handful of sautéed mustard greens and a catfish. The plate that piqued everyone’s interest the most was the one that cost RM23; it had rice, salted egg, a slice of fish, and sautéed mustard greens. Just like the video’s caption, “Daylight robbery.”

Despite being flabbergasted at the price, Malaysian netizens in the comments are as witty as ever. One sarcastically referred to the siakap issue from last year, “After going viral, the owner will go on TV and say, ‘I’ve warned that the fish is expensive, they still want to eat it.” Some quipped that the food is on par with a 5-star restaurant, while another said, “I thought it’s in Paris, apparently it’s just Malim.”
