Looking at Marvel Cinematic Universe’s filmography, superhero origin stories have been less regular in recent years. Phase 3 has been churning out sequels and giving post-origin characters such as Black Panther and Spider-Man their own solo movies.
Although we’ll be getting another origin story – thanks to the upcoming “Doctor Strange” – later this year, it’s just been confirmed that “Captain Marvel” will also be an origin story.
Here is what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had to say about featuring “Captain Marvel” as an origin story and not “Black Panther” as well, despite the movie being the titular hero’s 1st solo film: “[Black] Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in ‘Civil War’. But his standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world that you never saw. And ‘Captain Marvel’ is certainly an origin. It’s an origin story from the start.”
As aforementioned, Carol Danvers a.k.a. Ms. Marvel a.k.a. Captain Marvel first appeared in 1968’s “Marvel Super-Heroes #13” where she was a security chief in the United States Air Force. After being exposed to Kree alien technology from an explosion, Carol Danvers was able to gain a set of powers (including super strength, energy project and the ability to fly into space) after her DNA was infused with a Kree alien.
Does this storyline sound familiar to you? That’s cause Captain Marvel has a similar origin story to another DC Comics character.
However, given that Carol Danvers shares a similar story to Green Lantern’s origins, Marvel thought it would be best to revamp it. It’s probably a smart choice since Warner Bros. is planning to reboot “Green Lantern” and released it around the same time as “Captain Marvel”.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to ‘Green Lantern’. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do,” explained screenwriter Nicole Perlman.
As such, Feige and his team of writers have come up with a cool concept for the character to debut and subsequently join forces with her fellow Avengers down the road. “What is one of the coolest things about it is she will be by far the most powerful character we’ve ever introduced in the movie. ‘How do you find those limitations? How do you find those vulnerabilities?’ is something that is sort of at the crux of the story that we’re putting together,” he said.
“She has — as you know from the comics — an interesting story, and I think we have a very cool and unique way of telling that story. I don’t think it’s leaked yet exactly what we’re doing with her movie or how we’re doing it, but it will be cool. She will prove to be a very important character in our universe for all the movies,” Feige added.
Feige also teased that “the idea of all of the pre-existing Avengers interacting with her for the first time” is something he’s really excited about.
“Captain Marvel” is set for a 8th March 2019 release but she will have a role in “Avengers: Infinity War”, which is due out on 4th May 2018.
