Marvel may have found themselves a new director for one of its upcoming superhero films.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Coogler, who is known for helming this year’s action film “Creed“, is currently in talks to direct Marvel’s “Black Panther“.

The fictional superhero movie will star Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the prince from the fictional African nation of Wakanda, who is forced to take up the mantle after the death of his father.

He is the first black superhero and will first appear as a key figure in the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America in the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War“. In this film, his allegiance is “in flux” and he has some serious issues with Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan). This caused him to side with Tony Stark/Iron Man, who supports the Superhero Registration Act.

Coogler is best known for directing “Fruitvale Station”, a feature film that won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for US dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel Studios has approached Coogler twice on helming the “Blank Panther” stand-alone film. The first time Coogler was approached the studio, he declined the offer. At the time, he did not feel that the film was the right fit for him and went on to complete the post-production on “Creed”. Since “Creed” is now behind him, Coogler changed his mind and is currently in negotiations to helm the movie.

Set to be released on 6th July 2018, “Black Panther” will be produced by Kevin Feige while Joe Robert Cole will be penning the script.
