Many fans would know that Mandopop icon Jay Chou (周杰倫) has a penchant for gambling – but could the star secretly be in debt from gambling? Recently, there have been rumours that the singer currently owes over a billion yuan from gambling in Macau.

The rumours began after multiple blogs alleged that a “top-tier male star” gambled heavily for a week at the Wynn Palace in Macau and lost 1.03 billion yuan (approximately RM680 million). The blogs claimed the star had to mortgage three luxury homes and a private jet to pay off the debt. After piecing the clues, many netizens began speculating that the male star was Jay Chou.

However, his fans quickly came to his defence, arguing that the star hasn’t set foot in Macau in years – let alone the Wynn Palace. This issue also prompted fans to debate whether Jay Chou’s name was used to cover up the identity of the actual male star or another scandal. Even Taiwanese star Will Liu (刘耕宏) came out to clear his friend’s name, urging fans and netizens not to believe in groundless rumours.

Following the allegations, Jay Chou’s agency, JVR Music, issued a statement on Weibo to address the rumours. In the statement posted on 11th March 2025 (Tuesday), the company vehemently denied the allegations, stating that all the claims associating Jay Chou with the alleged gambling activities are entirely unfounded. JVR Music also urged netizens to stop the further spreading of misinformation.

Surprisingly, Weibo CEO Wang Gaofei (王高飞) also stepped in to address the circulating rumours. He argued that the allegations lacked substantial evidence, so the entire story might not even be real. On the other hand, Jay Chou seemed unfazed by the issue. On Instagram, the star shared photos of him working and hanging out with his music-producing team, and a video of him hanging out with Taiwanese magician Chen Guan Lin (陳冠霖)

It’s a relief that Jay Chou wasn’t implicated in this ordeal – if it’s even real. It’s also good to know that the star has a great reputation that many people would help clear his name. What are your thoughts on this?
