Here’s How These Malaysians Have Been Illegally Working As Grabfood Riders In Singapore

A local YouTuber previously showed what it was like for many Malaysians to travel back and forth to Singapore to work and endure hellish traffic. While one can take on many jobs in the neighbouring country, a food delivery rider is apparently not one of them.

According to Singaporean law, it is illegal for foreigners to work as a Grab delivery rider but some Malaysians were reportedly spotted carrying out deliveries in the neighbouring country. Here’s the full story:

In a report by Stomp yesterday (Wednesday, 4th October), many Singaporeans have been noticing several suspicious Grabfood riders when they were out delivering customers’ orders. To the locals’ surprise, these riders’ motorcycles had Malaysian-registered plate numbers on them, which make them illegal workers in the country. It became apparent what these Malaysian Grabfood riders were doing after closer inspection on their activities.

However, there were also witnesses who claimed that some of these riders tried to be as discreet as possible by not showing the name and logo of the company on the delivery boxes as well as not wearing the uniforms but the iconic green colour gave them away. As for how these Malaysian workers even managed to receive orders from customers in Singapore, it was suspected that they might be sharing Grab rider accounts with local riders.

There have been reports of riders using another person’s account to carry out deliveries. According to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Singapore, they have been enhancing the processes of major food delivery platforms to prevent the misuse of accounts by unauthorised parties.

According to the law, self-employed foreigners without a valid work pass can be fined not more than RM68,975 or 2 years imprisonment or both. If local riders were found to have shared their accounts with these foreigners, they could also face the same penalties.

We understand times are hard but perhaps it’s better to stick to delivering orders within the country rather than risk getting into trouble in Singapore.
