Commuting to work can be a hassle especially when you have to rush to catch the earliest commute or endure the traffic jam. It’s even more challenging if you live far away from your workplace. So, can you imagine having to travel back and forth between countries for work every day?

That’s the daily life of many Malaysians living in Johor who travel to Singapore for work everyday. A local YouTuber decided to try if it was really worth his time and energy to do what these people have been doing for years.

Chun Weng, a Malaysian YouTuber, posted a video on his YouTube channel to share his experience of what it’s like traveling between countries to work. The local YouTuber has been curious about whether it is worth working in Singapore; with the same 8 hours/day and making thrice the salary. Chun decided to live in Johor Bahru momentarily to test this theory.

He met up with another content creator who shared her experiences of traveling between the two countries daily. The influencer shared that he had to wake up at 4:19am and take a Grab ride to JB Central (which cost about RM5). He’d reached the station by 5:50am and it takes about 2 hours to go through customs and catch the bus to Singapore. During the journey, Chun realised how horrible the traffic is. Thankfully, he reached his “workplace” by 7:45am.

By 3pm, the Malaysian YouTuber started to feel exhausted as he’d been awake longer compared to the Singaporean locals. While it’s true that Malaysians can make a lot of money when working in Singapore, Chun reflected on his initial question of whether the journey and exhaustion was worth the higher salary.

At the end of the video, Chun concluded that the decision to work somewhere depends on the situation they’re in and for many, they have no choice but to sacrifice their time and energy in order to earn more to provide for their loved ones.

So it’s not necessarily about making a lot of money but the things you’d have to sacrifice in order for you and your family to live a comfortable life. Chun’s video definitely reminded us to count our blessings.
